Homestead Exemption.
What is Homestead Exemption and why is it important?
Homeowners in Florida can apply for Homestead Exemption which allows up to $50,000 to be deducted from the assessed value of your home. This means that up to $50,000 can be removed from the value of your home which will reduce your property taxes. This applies for primary/permanent residence ONLY, you cannot apply for homestead exemption if it is an investment property.
Applications are taken year round, but the filing date to apply is March 1. In order to qualify you must have title on your home by January 1 of the tax year of application. I HIGHLY recommend applying within the first few weeks of owning your home.
